Innovations in Teaching and Learning

Welcome message

Department of Biomedical Engineering

To foster a dynamic learning environment that integrates cutting-edge technologies and hands-on experiences, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and creativity needed to excel in the evolving field of biomedical engineering. The Faculty at the Department of BME always encourage students to apply engineering principles to solve complex biomedical challenges, promoting critical thinking and innovation.

  • We tried to incorporate problem-based learning and real-world case studies to simulate medical technology challenges. We facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration by integrating knowledge from engineering, biology, medicine, and data science. Design interdisciplinary projects that involve collaboration between students from different departments, focusing on topics like biosignal processing, tissue engineering, and medical imaging.
  • We provide opportunities for students to engage in hands-on learning through laboratory experiments, simulations, and prototyping. We develop courses and workshops on emerging technologies, such as AI-driven diagnostics, IoT-based healthcare systems, and 3D bioprinting.

We encourage students to think beyond conventional approaches and develop innovative solutions that can be translated into marketable products or services.

  • We introduce innovation-focused courses that cover the design, development, and commercialization of biomedical products, including mentorship programs and industry collaboration in the curriculum.

In addition, innovative teaching methods are adopted to ensure development of technical competency, innovative thinking, leadership skills in the students. This can foster Strengthened industry-academia collaboration, leading to internships, partnerships, and job placements for students.

  • Use of Technology in teaching: The Department has effective practices and teaching methods for efficient use with computer-based technology solutions and integration with conventional methods. The Integration of Communication and Technology (ICT) based teaching methods helps to define, create, and update subject matter and efficiently disseminate information from the teachers. The department uses smart screen and LCD projectors to deliver lectures. Incorporating the simulation approach in conjunction with physical experiments also significantly improves the students learning in the laboratory with appropriate pre-laboratory demos, innovative models, and manuals.
  • Creative teaching practises: Faculties give creative assignments in Biomedical Engineering can help students to apply theoretical concepts with real-world problems, encouraging innovation and hands-on learning. Faculties encourage students to develop a web application or portfolio that facilitates their own problem statement and solutions.

Use of Innovative and demonstrative models

Demonstrative models are used by faculties to illustrate and explain complex concepts in a tangible or visual way. Demonstrative models are developed and submitted to the Human Anatomy and Physiology lab by MTech first year students. All teaching models are prepared based on the syllabus.

Brain Gym and Gamification of courses

We encourage students to think critically about the material as they solve crossword clues, fostering deeper understanding. This helps students improve their problem-solving abilities by working through challenging clues and puzzles under time constraints. In addition, this also allows the instructor to gain insights into students’ grasp of the material, highlighting areas that may need further clarification or review.

Flipped classroom approaches

Instead of lectures being delivered in the classroom, they are recorded as videos (along with study materials) and assigned as homework. This freed up class time for more interactive activities such as discussions, problem-solving, an collaborative projects.

Business canvas models

Business canvas models were used to inculcate innovation, translation and entrepreneurship. The student team worked to brainstorm ideas, do double diamond thinking and build business canvas model for the course Innovation translation and Entrepreneurship.
